What Causes Overheating While Sleeping?

It’s one of those questions that I have asked myself more than once, what causes me to overheat? Well, for myself, it’s just because i’m sensitive to warm temperatures, so naturally i’ll sweat if it’s too warm or if I have too many layers on me. But some people don’t have that issue, they have other medical/non-medical reasons for sweating the bed.

Medications

Taking certain medications can lead to those pesky night sweats. Antidepressants have been known to lead to sweating in bed. This is a range that goes from 8%-22% of people taking them. Other psychiatric drugs have also been known to cause this issue as well such as aspirin or acetaminophen that is usually used to lower a fever.

I can personally attest to this. I used to be on an antidepressant and it did, in fact, attribute to my warm sleeping. Once My doctor removed me from them, I found myself sleeping a little cooler. I still needed the help of my mattress, however.

Menopause-For Women

As much as some don’t want to see this word, it’s bound to happen to you if you’re a woman. If you have ever seen a movie where someone is going through menopause and they are having a severe hot flash, it’s not an overreaction, it really happens. My mother-in-law went through menopause and I watched her drip in sweat from time to time, looking for a way to cool down.

This is a really common cause of night sweats for women. Since a woman’s estrogen is falling during this change, the hypothalamus is greatly affected. Since this is what regulates your body temperature, the lack of estrogen makes the brain detect too much body heat. This is when your brain tells your body to release hormones to help lower your body heat. Your body then essentially goes into overdrive with the sweating.?

Andropause-For Men

Don’t worry women, you aren’t alone here. Men can go through changes too, which includes losing their testosterone. Men, if you are sweating the bed, this could be related to low testosterone. As men get older, their levels of testosterone will begin to diminish, leading to andropause, the menopause for men.

During this change, men will suffer from night sweats, just as women do. This is also another effect of low testosterone levels as the result of hormone therapy to treat prostate cancer, which is the most common form of cancer in Canadian men. For those who don’t know what it is, the prostate is a gland that is part of a man’s reproductive system that’s only the size of a walnut.?

Certain Memory Foam

It’s not a medical condition, but it is a cause of overheating while you are sleeping. Memory foam catches and retains your body heat. So since it has no place to go, it’ll just keep building up, increasing the temperature of the mattress which then increases your body temperature. If your body temperature gets too high, your body sweats to try to cool it down.

?Not all memory foam mattresses and toppers are like this, however. A lot of them are made with open cell technology or have cooling gel inside of them that helps keep your body temperature regulated so that you aren’t having the overheating issue.

Other Medical Conditions

There are also a bunch of medical conditions that can attribute to the night sweats such as certain cancers, hypoglycemia, hormone disorders, neurologic disorders, infections, and idiopathic hyperhidrosis, which is the unexplained excessive sweating that has no immediate medical cause.

The Risks

When you allow yourself to become overheating, you are putting your body at risk. As you increase in age, your body’s cooling mechanism doesn’t work as well. If you have the following, you are at an increased risk for night sweats as well as what was mentioned above:

  • Decreased blood circulation
  • Inefficient sweat glands
  • Weakness or fever
  • Salt-restricted diet for high blood pressure
  • Lifestyle factors
  • Being overweight or underweight

Once you begin to overheat, you’re putting strain on your body. As your body temperature increases, you are getting closer and closer to both heat exhaustion and heatstroke. You should look for the following symptoms:

  • Dull headache
  • Tingling sensation in the skin
  • Goose bumps
  • nausea

It’s best to try to keep yourself cool at night so that you aren’t at a higher risk for the above.

The Solution

Have you tried everything under the sun to help alleviate these night sweats and overheating to no avail? The solution may not be in a tea, herbal remedy, or a cool shower. Rather, the solution could be in your mattress! How, you ask? You’re already sweating on your mattress, why would a different one help? You would be surprised, actually, and here’s why.

Cooling Gel

Mattresses have advanced with the new technology of this day and age. One of the more recent advancements is in the gel foam. This gel foam is usually a top layer of your mattress that is combined with micro gel beads that are infused into memory foam. These beads are designed to be cool when you touch it also helps add support when the memory foam is compressed.

These beads take their time when it comes to temperature change and spend the entire day cooling down, which is what makes the bed feel so cool when you lay on it. Most of the time, when this technology is combined with open cell technology, you’ll find yourself cooling down much quicker and staying cool throughout the night.?

Open Cell Technology

This open cell structure allows for better air flow, which makes is even more breathable than traditional memory foam. With just plain gel mattresses, you may still find yourself overheating a little bit because the warm air has nowhere to go.

Yeah, you’ll feel cool when you first get into bed, but as your body temperature rises, the gel will warm up. If you only want to be cooled off when you first get into bed, gel is best, but combine gel with open cell technology, and you have yourself a real winner.

With that being said, let’s go check out some gel mattress reviews and hopefully you’ll find one that you think will solve your night sweat issues.?

Good Air Flow

If you don’t have a mattress with good airflow, you’re going to overheat. The reason for this is because the mattress catches all of your heat and there’s nowhere for it to escape. So as you’re sleeping, the heat is going to remain in the mattress and just make you uncomfortable and hot. You want something that has open cells, gel, or some other kind of cooling foam.
