The History of IKEA

Before we get into the products and all of the good stuff you’re wondering about, let’s take a look at the history of IKEA to get a better idea of what they are all about.

Who, Where, Why

IKEA was founded by Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. If you take a look at the first letter of each one of his names, it spells IKEA-pretty neat, right? The company was founded in Sweden in 1943 by the 17 year old mentioned above, who is now one of the ten richest people in the world. He has an idea in mind that he would create furniture and products that would have eco-friendly simplicity at a cost that the everyday consumer could afford.

Where are IKEA Mattress Made?

The 15 different mattresses that come from IKEA can be manufactured in several different countries, depending on where you live since they have multiple warehouses and stores all across the globe.

Mattress

IKEA offers 15 mattresses that include memory foam, latex, innerspring, and hybrids. If you aren’t sure which one would be best for you, let’s break down each one and go over the benefits.

Memory Foam

Memory foam mattresses are my personal favorite because they have the amazing ability to conform to the body for optimal pressure relief. They are also perfect for proper spinal alignment during the night, as long as your firmness level matches the way you sleep. If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll want something on the medium side. If you’re a back sleeper, you need something that’s medium-firm. If you are a stomach sleeper, which is actually really bad for you, you’ll need a firm mattress so that you aren’t contorted and bent out of shape (literally) all night.

Memory foam also comes in so many options in terms of firmness and cooling abilities. If you tend to sleep warm, you’ll want a mattress that has some kind of cooling technology in it such as cooling gel, beads, or open cell foam. IKEA Does offer mattresses like this thankfully.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are the most popular types of mattresses on the market and the next largest selection for IKEA. They are very affordable, consumers are familiar with them because they have been around for so long, and they have different firmness and comfort options. Unfortunately, innerspring beds tend to have a below average durability rating because of the springs getting worn out so quickly, which is where those generous IKEA warranties would come in handy.

Spring mattress are also not preferred for pain relief like memory foam is. The springs tend to do a number on hips, shoulders, and feet. They’re not very good at spacing out the comfort or conforming to the body. Although, if you’re on a tight budget and these aren’t an issue for you, it’s a great quick fix. You can check out one or two of these IKEA spring mattress reviews below.

Pillow Top

IKEA has a small selection of pillow top mattresses, but I figured I should cover these anyway. These are often found on innerspring beds. They are kind of like hybrid mattresses because they have a little bit of everything inside of them. The inside generally has individually wrapped coils with layers of memory foam and a pillow top layer for added comfort.

The pillow top layer can consist of one of many different materials such as:

  • Fiberfill
  • Cotton
  • Wool
  • Memory foam
  • Latex
  • Regular foam

They may seem like the more comfortable option, but they do tend to hold heat, unfortunately. If you are someone who overheats at night due to a medical condition such as Multiple Sclerosis, then this would not be a good option for you.

Latex

Latex mattresses are very durable, but usually very expensive depending on what they are made of. If they are completely natural, that means that they don’t have any kind of synthetic blend to them. They would be naturally hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, dust mite, and allergen resistant. They are made from the sap of the rubber tree and are extremely eco-friendly.

Unfortunately, IKEA only offers 1 completely natural latex mattress and 2 synthetic latex mattresses. These do tend to be more firm than traditional memory foam and they do hold a lot more heat, just as a word of warning. If they do turn out to be to firm for your liking, it’s nothing that a good mattress topper can’t fix.

Top 5 IKEA Mattress Reviews

In this section, we will review 5 IKEA mattresses that we think are top contenders for the top spot. We’ll cover their features, benefits, price, and all of the factors that would make a mattress the best.

Hjellestad

  • 15”
  • 365 days to try it out
  • Pillow top/innerspring
  • 3.1 lb/cu. Ft polyurethane memory foam
  • 1.7 lb/cu. Ft polyurethane foam
  • 1.5 lb/cu. Ft polyurethane foam
Hjellestad

The IKEA Hjellestad is an integrated pillowtop mattress with memory foam that molds to your body. It falls into the innerspring category and has a double layer of pocket springs that give your body the support it needs. The memory foam layer in the pillow top improves blood circulation to your muscles and skin, helping your body to relax better.

Inside of the bed is another soft layer of mini pocket springs that contour to the natural curves of your body to help enhance the comfort of the bed. Those individually wrapped pocket springs inside of the core of the mattress help to work independently to give your body the support it needs in all the right places by following all of its movements.

On each of the sides, there is a protective cover and handles that make it easy to carry. When the mattress is in place, all you need to do is unzip and remove the cover. With this mattress, you get a generous 25-year warranty and a beautiful, comfortable bed. Plus, you get to try it out for 365 days!

Pros

  • Good pressure relief
  • Good motion isolation
  • Comfortable for most
  • Good for back sleepers
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Complaints of it being too firm
  • Very heavy
I would recommend this bed for back sleepers.

Morgedal

  • 7”
  • 365 days to try it out
  • Foam
  • 2.2 lb/cu.ft. polyurethane foam core
  • 1.7 lb/cu. Ft polyurethane foam layer
Morgedal

The IKEA Morgedal is one of the most affordable mattresses in the catalog. This bed is made with a high resilience foam that gives the proper support to each part of your body by closely following the movements you make while you’re sleeping. It features a 2.2 lb/cu.ft. density in the core of it and a 1.7 lb/cu.ft foam layer.

The comfort zone that’s built inside of this mattress gives you a very precise support on your shoulders and hips while offering your pressure relief in those areas as well. As someone who has arthritis, I can really appreciate the pressure relief factor of the Morgedal and it’s probably the best IKEA mattress for side sleepers.

Fortunately, inside of the Morgedal is a generous layer of soft filling. This filling gives your body even more support and comfort. One of my other favorite features of this bed is that the cover is machine washable! With the purchase of this bed, you’ll be backed by a generous 25-year warranty and you can try it out for 365 days and have the chance to exchange it if you don’t like it.

Pros

  • Very affordable
  • Comfortable
  • Available in multiple firmness's
  • Cover is machine washable

Cons

  • Durability issues
This mattress is recommend this bed for those who sleep on their sides and back or for those who are on a budget.

Morgonava

  • 10”
  • 365 days to try it out
  • Latex
  • 1.7 lb/cu. Ft. dense layer of polyurethane foam
Morgonava

This is one of the more expensive beds that IKEA has to offer because of the shear fact that it’s natural latex. In my opinion, natural latex is a very good option for those who may suffer from allergies because it’s naturally hypoallergenic, allergen resistant, dust mite resistant, and antimicrobial.

The Morgonava’s natural latex composition helps you to fully relax by contouring to your body’s natural shape to relieve pressure points and give your spine support with precision. The natural materials in this bed, such as wool and cotton, help the air flow through the mattress, ensuring you maintain a comfortable body temperature throughout the night. You won’t find yourself getting too hot or too cold.

Inside of this mattress is also a comfort zone for optimal comfort and pressure relief. It also has a 1.7 lb/cu. Ft. dense layer of polyurethane foam which helps with the personalized support and pressure point relief for those who may suffer from chronic back pain or for those who are looking to avoid it at all costs. This is probably the best IKEA mattress for back pain.

Pros

  • Helps alleviate back pain
  • Comfort zones help pressure points
  • Helps with temperature regulation
  • Generous warranty

Cons

  • Not suited for larger individuals
This mattress is recommend for lighter individuals who suffer from back pain.

Matrand

  • 7"
  • 365 days to try it out
  • Memory Foam
  • 3.1 lb/cu. Ft. polyurethane memory foam
  • 1.7 lb/cu.ft. regular polyurethane foam
Matrand

The IKEA Matrand comes in both the memory foam and the latex versions and both are quite affordable for those who may be shopping on a budget. This mattress features a layer of memory foam that molds to your body to help contour it gently for the relief of pressure points for optimal relaxation and sleep. The Matrand has 3.1 lb/cu. Ft. polyurethane memory foam and 1.7 lb/cu.ft. regular polyurethane foam.

Inside of the mattress is also a comfort zone that helps to give you support to relieve pressure points, as with the memory foam, on your hips and shoulders with precision. There’s nothing worse than waking up on a hard mattress that causes hip and shoulder pain. Inside of the Matrand is also a layer of soft filling that adds to that support and comfort factor.

The one feature that I love about the Matrand is that it’s very easy to keep clean because you can remove the fabric and wash it in the machine. This will help keep your mattress in tip-top shape for as long as you have it.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Supportive
  • Affordable
  • Most durable for children’s rooms

Cons

  • Complaints of sagging
  • Complaints of deformation
I would recommend this mattress for children or adults who are looking for a wallet friendly memory foam bed.

Jomna

  • 5.8”
  • 365 days to try it out
  • Spring

The cheapest on the list of IKEA mattresses is the Jomna spring mattress. This bed features Bonnell spring coils/cross coil springs. This is a very low density mattress, which means that it’s probably not going to be very supportive. It has a medium-firm feel to it and is only best for those who are on a very tight budget.

The Jomna is a mere 5.8” thick, which means it would probably be best on a child’s bed, one who isn’t picky about how comfortable they are while they sleep. Springs, especially those that are cheap, aren’t known for being overly supportive for larger adults. Unfortunately, this is the least comfortable mattress you’ll find on IKEA’s list in comparison to the others.

The Jomna isn’t going to last very long if you are using it as an adult. If you are looking for a bed that’s a temporary solution or one that you aren’t going to use very often, then this would be a very budget-friendly solution. It does say that the the springs are meant to provide support for your entire body and that most of their customers are satisfied with it, but it’s ill advised if you’re looking for a long term solution.

Pros

  • Very wallet friendly
  • Works well for children

Cons

  • Low durability ranks
  • Not comfortable
  • Bad for backs
I would recommend this bed as a quick fix if you're on a budget, not a long term solution in the least.

The Verdict

Okay, so the IKEA mattresses that we’ve seen we have to ask ourselves, “are ikea mattresses good?”. Honestly, I think it all depends on which one you get. There are some on their website that are great and others are just barely passable for good. In my honest opinion, the best ikea mattress here would have to be Hjellestad.

Hjellestad

I chose the Hjellestad for many reasons. It has great pressure relief, great motion isolation, and it may be the best for back sleepers. All of the mattresses here come with 25-year warranties and you can exchange them if you don’t like them. IKEA may not be the best mattress supplier in the world, but their beds are highly affordable and they have wonderful customer satisfaction.
