What’s The Deal With Back Pain?

Back pain, the one pain that sometimes just can’t be ignored. I am also a sufferer of Patella femoral syndrome, which is basically just a pain in the front of the knee that i’ve had since my athletic days in high school. I can go through my whole day ignoring the pain, but when I have a fibromyalgia flare up in my back, the pain can’t be ignored. So what do I do? I go lay in my bed and the way it conforms to my body, it helps ease some of that pain.

A sore back can be attributed to many different things. It can also fluctuate from a mild, annoying pain to a sudden, sharp pain that may make movement difficult. It can be slow to rear its ugly head or it can hit you like a ton of bricks. When my sciatica acts up, I find myself stuck in a bent over position because any movement I make hurts.

There are also factors that can increase your risk for back pain:

Lack of physical fitness

Heredity

Arthritis

Certain forms of cancer

Old age starting between 30-40 years old

A strenuous job

Smoking

Obesity

Other diseases that affect the bones and joints

Causes For Back Pain

Causes for back pain are different than the risk factors. There are many causes such as mechanical problems with the back which can include:

  • Muscle tension
  • Ruptured discs
  • Breakdown of discs
  • Bulging discs
  • Spasms
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Sprains and fractures
  • Scoliosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Kidney stones
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Endometriosis
  • Arthritis
  • Spinal stenosis

These are just a few examples of what can potentially cause annoying back issues. I can personally attest to at least 2 of these conditions and the back pain that comes with it, is terrible. And if I am going to get into bed with this pain at the end of the day, I want something that supports my spine the way it needs to be supported while i’m making a solid attempt to sleep.

How Can A Mattress Help?

You may be wondering how a mattress can change your back pain. It’s okay, I didn’t understand it either until I did my research and got a good mattress for lower back pain, something I have quite often.

Sleep Posture

Your sleep posture can be the difference between waking up feeling refreshed or feeling like you just got done wrestling in a WWE match. Ideally, a medium to firm mattress is best for back support and improving your posture while you sleep. Sleeping on your back or on your side in combination with a firm mattress, or a mattress that’s not completely going to suck you in, is the best way to reduce back pain as you are sleeping.

Bad back posture while you’re sleeping is mostly caused by tense muscles, which can put your body out of alignment. If you are already suffering from back problems, this will only make it worse.

Firmness

As I said above, a firm mattress is ideal for proper spinal support. This may be true, but firmer isn’t always better. A mattress that’s too firm won’t support your body evenly, only supporting the heavier parts. If a mattress isn’t firm enough will sag and prevent the natural alignment of the spine. Neither one of these types give your muscles a chance to relax. It’s best to find something that’s along the lines of medium-firm.

Stomach Sleeping

I’m a stomach sleeper, and I can tell you that i’ve had my fair share of back pain from this. If you’re lying on a mattress that’s too soft, your spine is going to bend in ways it shouldn’t. If you tend to sleep on your stomach the most, you want something that’s more firm to keep your body properly supported. I suggest checking out some firm mattress reviews to find the right one for you.

Side Sleeping

The best bed for side sleepers with back problems is going to be a mattress that has a little bit of give to it. This is to ensure that the shoulders and hips are cushioned. If you’re on a mattress that’s too firm, you’re going to have issues with pressure points and you’ll end up with more pain than just in your back.

Back Sleeping

Back sleeping means that you need a mattress that’s medium-firm. This gives you a firm enough surface to support your lower back while being soft enough to contour to your body. If you have a mattress that’s too firm, it’s going to push against your spine whereas a mattress that’s too soft won’t give you the proper support needed.
