Benefits Of A Platform Bed

There are quite a few benefits of a platform bed that most consumers aren’t aware of and wouldn’t be unless they researched them.

They’re Cost Efficient

With a platform bed, there’s no need for box springs, which can cost you a few hundred dollars, depending on where you purchase them from. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of box springs because over time they tend to sag or break on the edges. With these types of beds, you’ll either have a solid foundation or slats. It’s best to check the warranty criteria of your mattress before you choose which platform bed you want. Usually, the slats should be no more than 3 or 4-inches apart if you’re using a memory foam mattress.

Ventilation

Mattresses that sit on foundations that aren’t breathable can potentially build up mold. This could be potentially dangerous if the entire mattress becomes mold infested. With platform beds, especially those that are slatted, they ventilate your mattress and reduce the exposure to moisture. The only thing you would have to worry about is if you sweat a lot at night. This is nothing that a mattress protector can’t fix for you. It’ll prevent bodily fluids from getting into the mattress and potentially voiding your warranty.

Storage Made Easy

If you’re purchasing a whole new bedroom set, platform beds with storage space inside of them virtually eliminate the need for a dresser. If you choose one that has the bookshelf headboard with it, this takes away the need for end tables, freeing up space in a smaller bedroom. These beds give you plenty of options when it comes to how many drawers you want or how large of a headboard you’re looking for.

Easy Access For Kids

These types of beds are generally low to the ground, depending on which style you choose. This makes it easy for small children to climb in bed rather than struggling to get into a bed that’s just as tall at they are. This also makes those bed skirts that are almost impossible to put on by yourself, a thing of the past.

Types Of Platform Beds

There are an unbelievable amount of different types of platform out there. Some of them are best suited for children and some are best suited for those who need extra space for storing clothing or other items. Here are some of the most popular types.

Storage

Platform beds with storage drawers are perfect for freeing up space in smaller bedrooms. You can get these with one or multiple drawers of various sizes. If you don’t need a drawers, rather a bookshelf, there are several options for this as well. Platform beds with headboards that have shelving in them make great storage areas for books, personal items, and anything else you want to keep handy while in the immediate area of your bed.

Floating

Floating beds have a very futuristic look to them. They’re simply attached at the head to the wall and the rest of the bed is supported by a center leg. You don’t see that leg and it gives the illusion that the bed is floating in the air. How cool is that?! You can use this type for a queen mattress or a king mattress, among other sizes.

Upholstered

Platform beds with fully upholstered frames give the bed a very solid look, it’s also an extremely luxurious and elegant look. A lot of times, these types of beds have recessed mattresses that go down into the frame, making it very easy to tuck in sheets. This comes in handy for those who like their bed to look neat.

Traditional

The traditional platform beds are very simple. They have a very airy look to them and are the ideal solution for rooms that are limited in space. These are usually very affordable and come in a variety of different styles which can include a poster bed look, canopy, and futon style.

Product Review

Amerisleep Liberty

PacBed Original
  • 100-night trial
  • 20-year warranty (10 year full replacement, 10-year pro-rated)
  • Medium feel
  • 12” profile

The Liberty mattress by Amerisleep has a 12” profile and a medium feel. It is ideal for couples who sleep in different positions and need a different feel than their partner. This bed combines their Bio-Pur and Affinity foam layers to give you a soft, yet responsive feel. This features relieves pressure points that give you the feeling of floating.

The cover of this mattress is made with Celliant, which is is constructed of thermoreactive yarm that turns body heat safely into infrared. This gives you a comfortable sleeping temperature throughout the night and is also said to help you fall asleep 15 minutes faster and stay asleep longer. The Bio-Pur foam helps keep you cool as well and is five times more breathable than that of traditional memory foam.

If you have a platform bed that doesn’t have slats to help circulate air between you and the mattress, the technology in the top rated Liberty would be a great solution for you and your foundation if you sleep warm. It does recommend that if you do have a slatted base, they should not be any more than 3” apart.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Back pain reduced
  • Not too soft, not too firm
  • Keeps cool

Cons

  • Lack in edge support
  • Motion transfer felt after mattress is broken in
This bed would be well recommended for platform beds with 3” spaced slats or a flat base.

Layla

Layla Mattress
  • 120-night sleep trial
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Dual sided for firm & soft feel
  • 10” profile

The Layla is a very special mattress and will definitely work well with a platform bed. It is copper infused and double sided. By double sided, I mean that if you are sick of the way one side feels, you can flip it over for either a softer or more firm feel, depending on which side you started out on. Not many mattresses are made like this, but it’s a great feature in my opinion.

Since this mattress is copper infused, it has a lot of very healthy benefits for you while you’re sleeping. Copper has been used for many years as an alternative medicine for joint pain relief, better blood circulation, and regulating body temperature. It has been used since the age of the Ancient Egyptians, so why not trust the copper properties?

One other feature of the Layla that I really like is the thermo-gel cover. A lot of companies are more concerned with the cooling gel inside of the mattress. The Layla has a gel infused cover to keep you cool throughout the night since it’s the closest thing to your body. This may possibly be the best kind of mattress for a platform bed based on all of its features.

Pros

  • Dual sided for a change in firmnesses
  • Cooling cover
  • Comfortable
  • Great for joint pain relief
  • Affordable

Cons

  • May be hard to flip
  • The soft side seems too firm
I would recommend this mattress for any platform bed, especially if you want to alternate the feel of your mattress.

Leesa

  • 100-night trial
  • 10-year full replacement warranty
  • Medium feel
  • 10” profile

The Leesa mattress was specifically designed to have a universal adaptive feel to it. It provides cooling, core, and contouring support that every person needs at the end of a long day. It is composed of three layers of high quality foam that gives you these features. The layer that starts it all is the cooling Avena foam. This is a two inch top layer that allows air to flow through for a cooler night’s sleep. It also provides you with freedom of movement.

It also has 2” of pressure relieving memory foam that contours to your body and provides pressure relief that you would always expect from a good quality memory foam. The 6” of dense core support foam adds strength, durability, and structure to the rest of the mattress to support sleepers of all shapes and sized without feeling too firm on the top.

This mattress will work wonders on a platform bed that has slats no more than 3” apart and it will also work on a solid base platform. The other thing that I would like to point out that I really like is the fact that you can choose the design of your cover. You can choose between the traditional look that they offer or a more artsy look.

Pros

  • Decreased aches and pain
  • Not too soft, not too firm
  • Easy setup
  • Comfortable
  • Great for all sleepers

Cons

  • Traps heat
  • Too firm
  • Causes a rolling effect if one person is heavier than the other
I would recommend that this mattress is best for a slatted bed. Since there are complaints of heat being trapped, the slats may help circulate the air better.

Saatva

  • 120-night sleep trial
  • 15-year non-prorated warranty (you pay shipping costs)
  • Firm, luxury firm, or soft plush
  • 14.5” profile

The Saatva is built with a coil on coil construction, making this a innerspring mattress rather than a memory foam one. Their lower coil unit features an hourglass shaped steel base and their top coil unit features individually wrapped coils that contour and respond to your unique body shape and weight, eliminating virtually all motion transfer. This construction combined with their advanced euro pillow top is usually only found in high-end expensive mattresses, but this one only cost a little less than $1,000.

This mattress also has a dual perimeter edge support system. Let’s face it, not many memory foam mattresses have optimal edge support like coil mattresses do. This bed has foam encased and anti-sag edge support for even better durability and more sleep surface. This means that you can use the entire bed to sleep on rather than getting close to the edge and realizing you may fall off and having to scoot back over towards the middle.

The Saatva also has an organic cotton cover and euro pillow top for extra padding and cushioning. Rather than being sewn to the top of the bed and losing shape or shifting, this particular top is inserted underneath the outer covering. This gives the bed a cleaner and neater look. To sum it all up, the Saatva also comes in three firmness levels for optimal comfort. There’s plush soft, luxury firm, and firm.

Pros

  • Increased sleep time
  • Great customer service
  • Comfortable
  • Multiple firmness levels to choose from
  • Great edge support
  • Reports of back pain relief

Cons

  • Luxury firm may still be soft
I would recommend this as the best firm mattress for a platform bed. No need to worry about sagging memory foam between slats.

Hyphen

  • 100-night sleep trial
  • 20-year warranty
  • Medium Feel
  • 10” profile

The Hyphen mattress is a different type of sleeping surface. It has been specifically designed for those who play hard during the day and need to sleep harder and recharge their body during the night. It has been tested over and over to ensure that it has the proper formula for the perfect mattress.

The cover is anti-microbial, breathable, and hypoallergenic. No more sleeping hot or having those pesky dust mites invading your personal space. The next layer is a proprietary Hyphen comfort layer. It’s well ventilated, hyper conductive, offers optimal pressure relief, low motion transfer, is anti-microbial, breathable, offers variable support, and features adaptive temperature regulation. This layer provides you with the optimal comfort and support that your body needs to rejuvenate throughout the night.

The next layer features pressure relief, low motion transfer, a healthy bounce, and variable support, all backed by the orthopedic support layer for optimal pressure relief. All together, this mattress makes for one heck of a great night’s sleep at a price you can surely afford.

Pros

  • Great support
  • Reduced tossing and turning
  • Sleeps cool
  • No chemical smell
  • Great customer service

Cons

  • Lacking edge support
I recommend this mattress for a platform bed without slats. The flatter and harder the surface, the better this mattress will perform. If you have slats, make sure they are no more than 4” apart.

The Verdict

Picking the best kind of mattress for a platform bed isn’t the easiest thing to do since they’re all pretty great options. Honestly, considering all of the features, benefits, pros, cons, and prices, I would have to highly recommend the Layla as the best mattress for a platform bed.

I chose this one because it’s flippable, works with both slatted frames and solid, it’s infused with copper, and the cons weren’t really too bad. Sure, it may be hard to flip, but if you have somebody to help, it shouldn’t be too bad. The other great thing about the Layla is that it has a nice, low profile. This will make it easier for small children or adults who may have pain, get in and out of bed a lot easier. All features point to a solid choice here.
