At some point in our life, we have suffered from some sort of back pain whether it be from pregnancy, sports, an accident, or just random pain here and there. For my husband, it is chronic from him being a contractor and constantly lifting heavy material and such.
When he started not being able to sleep we decided it might be time to consider purchasing a mattress topper to help give him some kind of comfort. I had done a little bit of research when we were trying to find one and I would like to share with you what I came up while searching for the best mattress topper for back pain.
Take a look at our top 5 mattress toppers for everyday use here.

If you have recently started experiencing lower back pain or just general pain that leaves you tossing and turning at night, there is a good possibility that it could be from your old, lumpy mattress. If you wake up in the morning stiff and sore but a good stretch eases the pain, this is a sign that your mattress needs to go or be adjusted. If you wake up in the middle of the night or toss and turn a lot, this is also another sign. So, how can this issue be resolved? A firm mattress topper that offers back support could help with pain relief.
You may be asking yourself how a mattress pad or topper could help you, well, the answer is simple. These toppers and pads can aid in the proper adjustments of your spine. You don’t want to choose something that is too firm or too soft. If you have a hard bed to begin with, an even more firm mattress topper isn’t going to help you much. All it is going to do is cause misalignment in your spine. If your topper is too soft, it’s going to push on pressure points in your back and interfere with your posture while you sleep which can aid in back pain as well.
Mattress toppers can do wonders with back support. They are also more affordable than buying a whole new mattress. If you like your mattress for whatever reason and just can’t part with it, a topper or mattress pad would be the ideal choice. There are many different kinds on the market which is why you should do a little research before you buy one. Mattress toppers are made from all kinds of different materials and offer multiple heights, densities, and features such as gel and memory foam.
If you haven’t already figured it out, there are many different types of mattress toppers on the market. Here are just a few different types:
These types are filled with feathers or down, often from gray or white duck down white goose down. The species of bird can vary.
The memory foam toppers are generally made from a polyurethane type of foam. They can range from 1 to 3 inches in thickness and can have different densities. They can also provide temperature control and air flow depending on the material.
This would be an ideal choice for those who may have allergies and are looking for something a little more hypoallergenic. They can be available in natural, organic, and certified organic designs.
This is another ideal natural choice for those who are health conscious. These are made with organic, certified organic, and natural cotton fillers and avoid synthetic materials.
You can get a topper usually with a choice of two different types of latex which are Dunlop and Talalay. They both have different varieties of thickness and have a protective wrapping.
Egg crate toppers are great for people who want to have a choice of feeling for any of the 5 zones of the body. They can either be softer or harder based on how the foam is sculpted and cut.
The mattress I was using before I bought a topper was a pillow top and it was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever slept on aside from the mattress in my pop-up camper. While we were going through the different kinds, we had to make sure we found the one that would be best for my husband’s needs. We ended up with a memory foam topper with a 4” thickness and breathable holes for temperature regulation and let me tell you something, I have never slept better.
We have had the same mattress for over 5 years now and it has yet to lose its comfort. We even started taking it camping with us because the pop-up mattress was too hard and it was causing more back pain for my husband. We replaced our hard camper mattress with our memory foam mattress and we sleep like babies, well, good sleeping babies and he had no back pain in the morning. We then ended up buying another one for the camper so that we didn’t have to transport the one from our bed back and forth all of the time.
The reason our topper has lasted us so long is because we take care of it the way it should be taken care of. I bought a cover that wraps around the entire mattress topper to protect it from dust and debris. If something happened and it needed to be cleaned, I took it off of the bed and placed it next to a window to let it air out.
I then take a vacuum with a hose attachment and work through the foam in a circular motion like the instructions on my topper say. If my topper gets wet somehow, i spot clean the stain with a small amount of detergent and water without soaking it. soaking the mattress could ruin it and then you would waste all the money you just spent. Wipe the mattress clean and let it dry to ensure it stays clean.
As good as all of these mattress toppers are, there can only be one winner. Based on all of the reviews and everything that was said, good and bad, about each one of them, the one that has the most features that would aid in back pain relief is the Lucid 2.5 Inch Gel Infused Ventilated Memory Foam Mattress Topper.
The reasoning for this is because it is resistant to allergens and dust mites on top of aiding in back pain relief. It also has the best warranty which would be a deal breaker for me if it didn’t have one. Yes, it is one of the more expensive ones, but once you look at the entire package, the price is 100% worth it.
